Digitizing with an On-Site Mechanical System
If you use a Mechanical, Sonic, or Laser digitizer at the job site, you need to purchase a system for each templating truck, and multiple systems become prohibitively expensive.

These systems only work in a line of sight or in a limited range, so most jobs require multiple setups and recalibrations. If tops are not in close proximity, the system has to me moved, re-set up, and often recalibrated before the next top can be digitized. This can be especially time consuming if tops are in multiple rooms or in a configuration where the system has to be moved multiple times. In some situations, there is not enough space to even set up the digitizer to measure some tops (such as in small bathrooms).

These systems are prone to damage and abuse out on the job site. Maintenance and repair on these systems is very expensive and time consuming.

Moving some of these heavy cumbersome units into and out of job sites is difficult and time consuming.

One of the advantages of the on-site digitizers is that physical templates can be eliminated, but that advantage is often a disadvantage in reality. Physical templates ensure that a top will properly fit into place once fabricated. Without a template, it is very easy to improperly digitize a top, either missing one or more points, missing a notch or digitizing the wrong point.
